The Auckland long distance athlete Kimberley Smith has finished an outstanding 5th in the New York marathon.

28 year old Smith finished 68 seconds behind the Kenyan winner Edna Kiplagat, and her top five placing in the world's biggest marathon follows her 10th place in the London marathon earlier this year.

US-based Smith pulled out of last month's Commonwealth Games in Delhi, concerned about security and atmospheric conditions, and to focus on the New York marathon.

Her long term goal is the London Olympics matahon in 2012.
