Martin defies conditions to inspire Blackcaps

8:38 am on 8 November 2010

Fast bowler Chris Martin has given the Blackcaps every chance of claiming an unprecedented win in the first test against India after an inspired attack left the hosts struggling on 82 for 6 in their second innings heading into the final day in Ahmedabad.

Martin claimed five wickets for just 25 runs ripping through the Indian top order after the Blackcaps batsmen fell just short of India's first innings total on the back of centuries from Jeese Ryder and Kane Williamson.

Willamson's 131 gave him the accolade of being the youngest ever Blackcap to score a test century on debut and the 20-year-old says paceman Martin surprised everyone on a pitch which seemed to suit the spinners.

Day five of the test resumes at about 5pm.
