Volts shock Aces in Auckland

6:43 pm on 19 November 2010

Otago quickly wrapped up the 43 runs they needed to beat Auckland by six wickets in their second round Plunket Shield cricket match at Colin Maiden Park on Friday morning.

Resuming needing just 43 runs with six second innings wickets in hand, sometime Black Cap Neil Broom reached his 50 with the other not out batsman, Derek de Boorder, making 31.

South African-born left-arm fast bowler Neil Wagner did the damage on the penultimate day with the ball, taking career-best figures of six for 50.

Wagner, who fancies playing for New Zealand once he becomes eligible next year, took career-best figures of six for 50 in Auckland's second innings - he also took four for 60 in the opening spell.

Northern Districts also easily beat Wellington at the Basin Reserve, after the Firebirds were all out for 266, the Knights reaching the required amount without loss after lunch for a 10-wicket win.

Central hardly broke a sweat in Napier, beating Canterbury by four wickets after lunch.

Central stay top, Northern are now second and Otago third.
