No joy for Groths in Wellington

6:03 pm on 20 November 2010

The Australian husband and wife tennis duo of Sam and Jarmila Groth have both been beaten in the singles semi-finals of the Futures tournament in Wellington.

Sam Groth losing to top seed and fellow Australian Brydan Klein wasn't so much of an upset, but Jarmila Groth, the world No.42, being beaten by the sixth seed and 255th ranked Elitsa Kostova of Bulgaria in straight sets was unexpected.

The 20-year-old Kostova now faces Japanese fifth seed Erika Sema, who defeated countrywoman and seventh seed Kumiko Iijima in easy straight sets in her semi-final.

The men's final sees the 236-ranked Klein against second seed Sebastian Rieschick of Germany, who's ranked 302nd. Rieschick defeated unseeded Australian James Duckworth in straight sets in his semi-final.

The finals will be held from midday on Sunday.
