11:36 am on 24 November 2010

Sir Bob Charles will return to where it all started as New Zealand Golf celebrates its centenary this weekend.

He'll be a special guest at the celebrations that begin with a Centenary Golf Day at the Royal Wellington Club on Friday.

Sir Bob will hit the commemorative first tee shot at at the Heretaunga course where, 56 years ago to the month, he won the New Zealand Openas an 18-year-old.

The left-hander went on to win the British Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes in 1963 and his 68 professional victories include four New Zealand Opens.

New Zealand Golf's Chairman, Philip Hassall says Sir Bob has made invaluable financial contributions to junior golf over many years and it's entirely appropriate he's starting the Centenary Celebrations.
