Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook became England's most prolific opening partnership in test cricket yesterday as they turned a big first innings deficit into a handy lead going into the final day of the first Ashes test in Brisbane.

Strauss and Cook both scored centuries after featuring in an opening partnership of 188 runs - Strauss was dismissed for 110 and Cook is 132 not out.

England will resume on the final day on 309 for 1, with Jonathan Trott the other not out batsman on 54. and with the Ashes holders leading by 88 runs, a draw looks the most likely result.
