England have dominated the final day of the first Ashes Test in Brisbane after declaring their second innings closed on 517 for one and setting Australia a target of 297 from a minimum of 39 overs.
The holders' moral victory claims were further enhanced when Simon Katich was out early for only four off the bowling of Stuart Broad.
But the other opener Shane Watson and the captain Ricky Ponting settled things down as the match headed for the inevitable draw.
England began the day leading by 88 but Australia's bowlers couldn't dislodge Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott whose stand of 329 is the best partnership for England for any wicket in Australia
Cook finished unbeaten on 235, his first test double century, and Trott's 135 not out is his second consecutive century against Australia.
The second test starts in Adelaide on Friday.
