The New Zealand women's football team has been drawn alongside Japan, Mexico and England in group play for next year's World Cup in Germany.

Football Ferns coach John Herdman admits to being relieved at avoiding the big three, Germany, the USA and Brazil.

Herdman says while they've got a tough group, there are a couple of others that look extremely tough.

In group A are Germany, Canada, Nigeria and France.... in group B Japan, New Zealand, Mexico and England... in group C the USA, North Korea, Colombia and Sweden and in group D Brazil, Australia, Norway and Equatorial Guinea.

The Football Ferns will open their campaign in Bochum on June 27th against group seeds Japan, meet England in Dresden on July 1st, and round up pool play against Mexico in Sinsheim on July 5th.
