Confusion hits World Cup vote

6:46 pm on 30 November 2010

Confusion's surrounding the secret ballot on the 2018 and 2022 World Cups as the Oceania Football Confederation -- which backs Australia's 2022 bid -- seeks the right to vote by replacing its banned boss Reynald Temarii.

The game's world governing body FIFA had suggested it would run the ballot with 22 of the 24 committee members, excluding Temarii and Nigerian Amos Adamu, both banned after an English newspaper said they'd offered to sell their votes.

But Football Federation Australias boss Frank Lowy says he understands Oceania will be represented and England's 2018 bid chief executive Andy Anson agrees.

FIFA wants Temarii to give up any appeal against his one-year suspension, in return for another OFC official getting a vote on Friday morning.

But Temarii's lawyer says there's an impasses as he'll decide only after receiving a fuller ruling.
