The former Springbok Brendan Venter will step down as Saracens' director of rugby in January so he can return to South Africa with his family.

The English club says Venter will take on a new role as technical director with Mark McCall and Andy Farrell taking over the day-to-day running of the team.

Venter's had his share of controversies since taking over Saracens in January, including a suspended four-week ban for implied criticism of a referee and a 14-week touchline ban for gestures and comments to spectators at Leicester.

He was also fined $45,000 this month, with $27,000 suspended to 2012, after European Rugby Cup officials found him guilty of misconduct.
