The Tauranga golfer Josh Geary has made a strong start in the US PGA Tour Final Qualifying School in Florida.

Geary fired a three-under par 69 to be in a share of seventh place, the best of the five New Zealanders in final qualifying.

He managed five birdies and two bogeys in the windy conditions at the Crooked Cat course at Orange National.

Tim Wilkinson is in a share of 51st after an even par 72, Danny Lee shot a two-over 74... while on a different course Michael Hendry is 3 over par and Steven Alker five-over.

There is a cut after 4 of the six rounds, while the top 25 earn their tour cards for next year.

Meanwhile Josh Carmichael and Richard Lee have made solid starts to the final qualifying school for the Japan Golf Tour.

They both shot two-under par 70's to be tied for 36th, while Eddie Lee shot 73 to be in 116th place in their six-round event.

In Spain, Caroline Bon and Wendy Hawkes are in a share of 20th place going into the final round of the second stage qualifying for the Ladies European Tour.
