Sigmund the hero as Phoenix snatch last minute win

The Wellington Phoenix football club have lifted themselves into A-League playoff contention after snatching a last-minute 2-1 victory over Adelaide United in Christchurch on Sunday night.

A header from defender Ben Sigmund in the dying seconds of stoppage time sealed a vital three points for Ricki Herbert's side, moving the Phoenix to outright fifth on the A-league ladder.

Trailing 1-0 at half-time, the Phoenix dominated the second spell, equalising through Tim Brown before Sigmund provided the match winner with time all but up at AMI Stadium.

The top six teams fight it out in the post-season and the victory lifts the Wellingtonians to outright fifth on the points ladder, firmly amongst the playoff hopefuls.

However the Phoenix and Sigmund know they must continue to keep pace with the competition front runners if they're to go one better than last season and reach the A-League grand final.

The Phoenix next travel to Skilled Park to face the Gold Coast on Saturday night.
