Ponting says they'll fight back

The Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting says they have the ability to fight their way back into the Ashes series after their worst defeat to England in nearly a quarter of a century - but they need to start showing it.

Ponting admits England outplayed them in the second Test, which the tourists won by an innings and 71 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series, but denied there was a gulf in class between the two sides.

There is plenty of speculation about Ponting's future as captain, but he maintains they can still win the series.

However with just nine runs in two innings in Adelaide, Ponting has dropped out of the top 20 in Test cricket's batting rankings for the first time since 2001.

The third Test starts Thursday week in Perth.
