Gill is a new type of shot putter

New Zealand's world junior shot put champion Jacko Gill, is part of a new breed in the sport.

At just 15-years-old Gill already holds the world record in both the 5-kilogramme and 6-kilo shot for every age group from 14 to 17.

Gill's latest triumph came at the New Zealand Secondary Schools athletic championships in Hastings last weekend, when he beat the world record for 17-year-olds by a full 63 centimetres, throwing 23.86 metres.

Yet to the casual observer the Takapuna Grammar student doesn't appear to be the right physique for shot put, though he has bulked up somewhat this year.

But Athletics New Zealand High Performance Director Kevin Ankrom says there's a different kind of shot putter coming through, and Gill exemplifies this trend...

Kevin Ankrom says the danger for Jacko Gill is he may plateau and burn out, when if he's managed properly he'll realise he has a long career ahead of him.
