Australia recover but England take first day honours in Perth

England tightened their grip on the Ashes cricket series with a strong start to the third test after winning a vital toss.

England's pace bowlers took advantage of a greentop pitch to have Australia reeling at 36 for 4, but the home team staged a middle order recovery and were eventually dismissed for 268.

Pace bowler Mitchell Johnson top scored with 62 Mike Hussey made 61 and Brad Haddin 53. In his first test for three years, the towering pace bowler Chris Tremlett took 3 for 61.

England's openers Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook saw their team through to 29 without loss at stumps.
