A punishing performance by the New Zealand Breakers has seen them escape with a thrilling 89-85 victory over the Hawks and reclaim top spot on the ANBL basketball ladder after the top of the table showdown in Wollongong on Friday night.

The Breakers survived a spirited last-gasp fight back headed by Gary Ervin to reclaim first-place and snap the Hawks' incredible run of 15 consecutive wins at home.

Kirk Penney continually supplied the answers to keep his team in front down the stretch, finishing with 22 points, while CJ Bruton and Gary Wilkinson each added 15.

Meanwhile in Adelaide, the 36ers clung on to a heart-stopping 81-77 victory over the Sydney Kings at The Dome, and the Gold Coast Blaze steered clear of a third consecutive loss with a resounding 93-81 home win over the Townsville Crocodiles.
