The New Zealand Breakers have consolidated their hold on top spot in the Australian basketball league with a 90-80 come-from-behind away win over the Melbourne Tigers.

Backing up after a crucial road win over title rivals Wollongong, the Breakers made it two from two in two days over the struggling Tigers on the back of another top-scoring effort from star guard Kirk Penney.

Penney notched 25 points including three massive three-pointers in the last quarter as the Breakers stormed home down the stretch.

The visitors trailed 47-44 at half-time at State Netball and Hockey Centre but levelled it up at 64-64 in the final break then dominated at the end with a 26-16 run.

Gary Wilkinson chimed in with 18 points for the game and Kevin Braswell 16. Corey "Homicide" Williams was the hosts' best with 19.

The Breakers have now played 12, won 10 while in Cairns the Taipans improved to third with a seven and three record after beating the visiting Townsville Crocodiels 56-51.
