Mark Waugh says big changes in the balance

The former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh says a win over England at the SCG could make a big difference to the future make-up of the Australian Test team.

While the Ashes are lost and the series widely considered a failure Waugh says a drawn Ashes could prevent the cleanout of personnel many are already calling for.

Australia don't play another Test match until their series against Sri Lanka in August and Waugh says the extended break is necessary to formulate a solid plan for the future.

Waugh doesn't support a generational change in the team but admits another loss in Sydney could force the selectors' hands.

He says if the series ends two-all it's not such a bad series but a three-one loss will make the selectors scrutinise the team for performers and non-performers.
