The former New Zealand number one Marina Erakovic has bombed out of the ASB Tennis Classic in the first round losing to Russia's Elena Vesnina 6-2 6-2 in a match that lasted just one hour and four minutes.
Facing the tournament seventh seed and playing her first competitive game since October Erakovic was always going to be up against it, but it was the manner of her defeat which was so disappointing.
Erakovic looked a shadow of the player that made it to the semi-final's of the Classic in 2008 and the bitterly disappointed Aucklander struggled to remain philosophical after the loss.
The seventh seed Vesnina, who thoroughly outclassed Erakovic to advance to the second round was sympathetic to the losing New Zealander, saying it was never nice to knock out the locals at their own tournament.
Erakovic does however get another chance at the Auckland tournament, when she lines up in the second round of the doubles which take place tomorrow.
