India's validated its number one world Test cricket ranking in securing a drawn in the third and final Test against South Africa in Capetown to draw the series.

Set an improbable 340 to win on the final day play was called off with eight overs remaining with the tourists 166 for three, opener Gautam Gambhir the mainstay of the innings with a cautious 64.

It was the first time in five tours of South Africa that an Indian side has managed to share the honours, an achievement which seemed unlikely when they were beaten by an innings and 25 runs in the first Test.
