Keys apologises to female assistant referee

3:15 pm on 25 January 2011

The British Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys has telephoned assistant football referee Sian Massey to apologise for his sexist off-air comments about her during an English Premier League match.

Keys and Andy Gray were dropped from today's line-up for the match between Bolton and Chelsea after the row over sexist remarks.

The pair caused controversy after agreeing female officials "don't know the offside rule" and predicting Massey would drop a clanger during Wolves' home game against Liverpool at the weekend.

She ended up correctly calling a crucial borderline decision.

Massey is said to have accepted the apology and to be keen to move on from the matter, and will be an assistant at the League Two match between Crewe and Bradford tomorrow.

Former Everton striker Gray and Keys are both long-standing front men of Sky Sports' football coverage.

They thought their conversation was private but it was obtained by the Mail on Sunday.
