Ski crash victim woken from coma

6:26 am on 26 January 2011

The Austrian ski federation has confirmed doctors treating Austrian ski crash victim Hans Grugger decided to wake him from the artificial coma he was placed in five days ago.

The OeSV federation says the results of the latest tests were so positive that the medical team decided to start the wake-up phase.

The phase will last a number of days and as soon as Grugger reaches a sufficient level of consciousness, he will undergo special neurological tests.

Grugger sustained serious head injuries in a high-speed fall in training for the World Cup downhill in Austria last Friday.

Grugger underwent an emergency operation, shortly after being airlifted off the Streif course in Kitzbuehel.
