Former world golf number one Tiger Woods is off to a good start in his first tournament of the year, carding a three under par 69 in the first round at the PGA tournament at Torrey Pines in San Diego to be tied for 22nd.

Back at Torrey Pines for the first time since his stunning playoff win at the 2008 US Open and keen to put the first winless season of his career behind him, Woods recorded three birdies and no bogeys on a near-perfect day for scoring to be 5 shots off the pace.

Korea's Sunghoon Kang holds a one-shot lead after an opening round 8 under par 64.
