Waikato players in race for NZ sevens side selection

7:01 pm on 1 February 2011

The New Zealand rugby sevens coach Gordon Tietjens will wait until the conclusion of Wednesday's warm-up match against the Cook Islands before deciding whether Waikato's Declan O'Donnell or provincial team-mate Rory Grice will join the 12-man squad for the Wellington leg of the sevens world series which kicks off on Friday.

O'Donnell and Grice were bracketed when Tietjens named his squad yesterday, and if O'Donnell doesn't sufficiently recover from an ankle injury Grice will make his New Zealand debut at the tournament.

Tietjens says he's waiting until the end of tomorrow's warm-up clash to give both players the chance to prove not only that they're fit for the tournament, but also motivated to win.
