Breakers keen to make history this season

11:55 am on 1 February 2011

The New Zealand Breakers big man Alex Pledger's quietly confident the Auckland side can finally claim the first title of any New Zealand team in an Australian club competition.

Winning on the road is crucial if the Breakers are to take out the Australian basketball league playoff series and pip the Warriors, the Phoenix and any of the trans-Tasman netballers to the prized scalp.

And after Pledger and co. gutsed out their road win at Cairns, where they ended the Taipans' home run at the Snake Pit with a thrilling come-from-behind victory on Sunday night, the ANBL title does seem the Breakers' to lose.

Pledger thinks a championship victory would be awesome for basketball in New Zealand, akin to the 2002 feats of the Tall Blacks national side's feat in finishing fourth at the World Championships.

Pledger says that giant-killing run caused basketball to "take off" here and an ANBL title would similarly inspire future players and fans.

The Breakers only arrived home early on Tuesday morning after overhauling a 21-point deficit to snap the Taipans' nine-game winning streak.

The Breakers are in action again at the North Shore Events Centre against fifth-placed Wollongong on Thursday.
