Bobridge breaks world record

The Australian cyclist Jack Bobridge has smashed the 4000 metre individual pursuit world record.

The 21-year-old Commonwealth Games gold medallist rode a time of four minutes and 10.534 seconds on his way to winning the Australian National title in Sydney.

Bobridge's time was just under half a second quicker than the previous record set by Briton Chris Boardman in 1996.

Bobridge, who last month became the national road race champion and has been touted by Lance Armstrong as Australian cycling's next big thing, will now head to Qatar to contest the Tour of Qatar with his road team, Garmin-Cervelo.
