Waikato's Declan O'Donnell will play in this weekend's international rugby sevens tournament in Wellington having proved he's overcome an ankle injury, by playing in New Zealand's training game against the Cook Islands.

O'Donnell had been bracketed in the side which includes five members of the Commonwealth Games gold medal winning team, alongside his provincial teammate Rory Grice.

New Zealand play Scotland, Papua New Guinea and Argentina in pool play on Friday.
