Super Bowl fans held up by snow

US airlines are scrambling to get Super Bowl fans to Dallas after a major winter storm clogged airport runways and forced the cancellation of more than 700 flights.

Some 150 thousand fans are expected to descend upon Dallas for Monday's (NZ time) NFL showdown between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl 45.

American Airlines say its doing everything it could to make sure fans don't see their dreams dashed by the 10 to 23 centimetres of snow piling up on runways at the Dallas-Fort Worth International airport.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell insists the ice and snow will have no impact on the annual football extravaganza.
