All Whites win top Halberg award

The All Whites unbeaten run at the Fifa World Cup finals has earned them the supreme honour at the Halberg Sports Awards, while Ricki Herbert was named coach of the year.

The football side was named team of the year ahead of Kiwis, All Blacks, Silver Ferns and rowers Eric Murray and Hamish Bond.

It is the first time in the history of the awards, dating back to 1949, that football has won the top award.

All Blacks captain Richie McCaw prevented a football cleansweep by taking the sportsman award ahead of Ryan Nelsen, Benji Marshall and Jossi Wells.

Valerie Adams won the sportswoman award for the 5th time, heading off Joelle King, Casey Williams, Nikki Hamblin and Alison Shanks.

Herbert won the coaching award ahead of Stephen Kearney, Graham Henry and Gordon Tietjens, while swimmer Gareth Kean won the emerging talent award.

Winston Reid's last minute equalising goal against Slovakia at the World Cup was voted New Zealand's favouirite sporting moment.
