The future of the New Zealand Golf Open has finally been announced by New Zealand Golf.

For the next three years it will be played in Christchurch on the Clearwater course.

For the past three years the event has been based the Hills course near Queenstown.

The tournament will be played from December 1st to 4th, following the Australian Open and Australian PGA tournaments.

As one of the last tournaments of the year the New Zealand Open could play a decisive role in deciding the Australasian tour's Order of Merit.

The chief executive of New Zealand Golf Dean Murphy says the major tournaments in Australia are prior to Christmas, so it was important to have a date that fits with them to help attract a strong field.

The minimum purse for the tournament will be $500,000.
