Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone says it's disappointing that the season-opening Bahrain Formula One race has been cancelled but says it was the only decision that could be made.

The Grand Prix, due to be staged on March 13, has been cancelled due to the political unrest in the Gulf state.

The decision to cancel was annnounced by Bahrain's Crown Prince and Bernie Ecclestone says it was inevitable.

The new season will start with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 27.

It's possible the Bahrain round will be rescheduled.
