Pietersen will shine in opener's role - Strauss

The tenacious England batsman Kevin Pietersen has been promoted to opener at the Cricket world cup on the sub-continent.

The England captain Andrew Strauss expects Pietersen to thrive in his newly assigned role and wants the team to play smart one-day cricket.

Strauss and his men were spanked 6-1 in the one-day series in Australia, somewhat souring their Ashes triumph but the 67-run victory over Pakistan in last week's warm-up match has put them in a better frame of mind.

Going into the 50-over World Cup, which eludes England despite three final appearances, the team has tweaked the batting order, promoting Pietersen in place of Matt Prior who dropped to the middle order.

Strauss who will partner Pietersen at the top is excited about the position swap.
