IRB sets up crisis unit folllowing Christchurch quake

9:44 am on 23 February 2011

There are reports that the International Rugby Board has set up a crisis unit to monitor the situation in earthquake hit Christchurch which is due to host seven games during the World Cup later this year.

The president of the French Rugby Federation Pierre Camou has told AFP that he had been in touch with IRB chief Bernard Lapasset who had informed him that a unit had been set up.

Camou says he doesn't think the World Cup is in danger.

An IRB statement said they wouldn't be commenting at this stage on the status of this year's World Cup.

The statement says the thoughts and deepest sympathies of the global Rugby family are with the people of Christchurch, their families and all New Zealanders at this very difficult time.

The IRB feels it would be inappropriate to comment at this stage on the status of Rugby World Cup 2011 infrastructure or operations.
