Arsenal again fall at final hurdle in quest to break trophy drought

Birmingham City have won English football's Carling Cup, shocking favourites Arsenal 2-1 to record only their second ever major trophy - the 1963 League Cup being their only previous triumph, and robbing the Gunners of their first title in six years.

A 89th minute goal by substitute Obafemi Martins after a defensive mixup sealed victory for Birmingham at Wembley after Robin van Persie had equalised Nikola Zigic's opener for the underdogs.

Defeat means Arsenal are without a trophy since their 2005 FA Cup win over Manchester United and manager Arsene Wenger struggled to disguise his disappointment at once again failing to break their title drought.
