The independent review of Swimming New Zealand's High Performance Programme is about to start led by Wellington businessman and former hockey Olympian Chris Ineson.

Sport and Recreation New Zealand 's most recent investment in the sport, announced in December, was conditional on an independent review of the programme being completed by April 30.

It will identify barriers to success and recommend changes aimed at increasing New Zealand swimmers' chances winning medals at next year's Olympics in London and beyond.

SPARC's invested $825,000 in swimming for the first six months of this year and funding after that will depend on implementation of the review's recommendations in areas such as leadership, coaching and support for athletes.
