IRB could decide Christchurch world cup fate without consultation

The New Zealand rugby union says it expects the sport's international governing body the IRB to take a consultative approach in deciding whether or not Christchurch will still host world cup matches, even though it doesn't have to.

The Crusaders main home ground, AMI stadium in Christchurch, remains closed until at least March 15th pending further engineering assesments in the wake of last month's earthquake.

Christchurch is scheduled to host seven world cup games including two quarterfinals.

The chief executive of the New Zealand union Steve Tew says the board discussed the matter yesterday but under the host agreement the IRB has the power to make the decision without consultation....
