Christchurch mayor Bob Parker says the city's AMI Stadium will need major work after the earthquake but should be ready for this year's rugby World Cup.

Parker's told TV3 the playing surface has been very badly damaged and is like a mini golf course, after he toured the venue yesterday, and will need to be completely rebuilt.

Parker says they have six months to do that and he thinks that's achievable.
