F1 drivers lambast new Pirelli tyres

6:27 am on 15 March 2011

Spain's two-time world champion Fernando Alonso has joined the criticism of the new Pirelli tyres to be used when the Formula One season begins later this month.

The Ferrari number one says with Pirelli tyres the drivers can't brake hard enough and the traction has deteriorated from last year, adding if drivers attempt to brake hard at the end of a straight the tyres consistently lock up, especially the rear ones.

The Italian manufacturer Pirelli takes over from Japan's Bridgestone as the exclusive supplier of tyres for the 2011 Formula One season, which begins with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March the 27th.

World champion Sebastian Vettel has also been far from impressed with Pirelli.

The Red Bull driver says the problem is the tyres wear down too fast, and are only good for 16 or 17 laps before they start to break up ruining the tyres making in impossible for the driver to control.
