Kiwi golfers finish in share of fourth at Riversdale Cup

The New Zealand golfers Ben Campbell and Ryan Fox have finished in a share of fourth place in the Riversdale Cup in Melbourne, one of Australia's most prestigious amateur events.

Campbell, a co-leader heading into the final round, could only manage a three-over 75 to finish on four-under par, four shots behind winner Nathan Holman who beat fellow Australian Matthew Stieger in a playoff.

Holman, the first round leader after a course record 62, had to birdie the final hole to get into the playoff.

Fellow New Zealand Academy player Fox fired an impressive two-under70 to join Campbell on four-under.

Campbell, who has been based in Melbourne this summer, never recovered from a horror start, dropping four shots in his opening five holes.

Mathew Holten, now a Christchurch-based professional, is the only New Zealander to have won the Riversdale Cup, founded in 1896.

The New Zealand players remain on Melbourne's famed sandbelt this week for the Australian Amateur Championship starting on Wednesday.

New Zealand's amateur women's world number one Cecilia Cho, number four Lydia Ko, Waikato's Emily Perry and North Harbour's Faye-Amy Nickson will contest the women's strokeplay at Huntingdale from Wednesday with the men competing at Victoria and Woodlands clubs from Thursday.
