The Swede Robin Soderling says he was stupid for playing with a foot injury after becoming the highest-seeded casualty at the Indian Wells ATP tennis tournament in California.

Soderling, the fourth seed who's already won three ATP titles this year was beaten in straight sets by German Philipp Kohlschreiber.

The premature departure of Soderling follows the early exits by fifth seed Andy Murray of Britain, sixth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer and defending champion Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia.

The world number one Rafa Nadal cruised into the fourth round with a 6-3 6-1 win over an American qualifier.
