The Alaskan musher John Baker has broken the record for the world's longest sled dog race, the Iditarod in Alaska.

The 48 year old is the first native Alaskan musher to win the event in 35 years.

He completed the 1,850 kilometre trek in eight days, 19 hours and 46 minutes, three hours faster than the previous best time.

The race commemorates a 1925 mission to deliver diphtheria serum.

Baker receives $75 thousand for the win and a new truck.
