New Zealand golfer third in Melbourne

The New Zealand golfer Ben Campbell has finished third to lead a strong New Zealand presence at the top of the leaderboard in the Australian Amateur Men's Strokeplay in Melbourne.

Campbell, who's from Masterton, fired a three-under par 69 to finish on nine-under par 279.

He could not quite match the outstanding form from overnight leader Cameron Smith of Queensland and England's Dave Coupland who finished tied on 13-under after rounds of 68 and seven-under 65 respectively.

Smith went go on to win the strokeplay honours on the first extra hole to match the women's title, also decided in a playoff for Lydia Ko over another New Zealander Cecilia Cho.

Five New Zealanders finished inside the cut for the top 32 players to contest the matchplay phase for the Australian Amateur title starting today.
