The former England Test cricketer Fred Titmus has died at the age of 78 after a long illness.

Titmus played 53-Tests for England and took 153 wickets during a first-class career that spanned a remarkable 33 seasons between 1949 and 1982.

He made his first class debut for Middlesex as a 16-year-old, and he was a handy lower order batsman who opened the batting for England six times.

He was also a talented footballer, playing professionally for Watford after earlier playing for Chelsea's junior side.
