Whincup races away in Melbourne, Van Gisbergen third

Championship leader Jamie Whincup ran away with the opening V8 Supercar race in twilight at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

Whincup led from the start in the non-championship race, the first of three, and the Holden driver was never under serious threat, flying past team-mate and polesitter Craig Lowndes off the grid and couldn't be caught in a 25-lap romp which ended under headlights.

Holden's Garth Tander drove superbly to come from 14th on the grid for second, with Ford's young New Zealand driver Shane van Gisbergen third.

The championship proper resumes in Hamilton next month.

Whincup leads the series by 144 points from Mark Winterbottom.
