A century from Aaron Redmond has helped Otago to 264 for six playing the leaders Northern Districts in Hamilton on the opening day of the penultimate round in cricket's Plunket Shield competition.

Northern took two early wickets but Redmond's 122 and an unbeaten 54 from Derek de Boorder rescued Otago.

Second-placed Central Districts won the toss, too, but decided to bat reaching 226 for four in Wellington with Peter Ingram unbeaten on 111.

And Canterbury will resume on 298 for six in Auckland, where the bottom-placed hosts decided to bowl.
