New high performance entity announced

A new high performance sports entity, merging SPARC's high performance unit and the two New Zealand Academies of Sport, has been announced by the Government.

The chair of SPARC's high performance board, Paul Collins, says there is an agreement in principle between the organisations involved to form the new body, which will be repsonsible for allocating over $60 million in high performance funding.

Collins says the merger will provide a more focused approach, linking a network of world-class facilities currently being developed around the country and take high performance sport in New Zealand to a new level.

The final strucure of the new organisation, what it will be called and who it'll report to is expected to be announced in July.
