SPARC says athletes have nothing to fear

6:52 am on 31 March 2011

The country's top athletes having nothing to worry the establishment of a new high performance entity, merging SPARC and the two New Zealand Academies of Sport, says SPARC chief executive Peter Miskimmin.

The organisations involved have an agreement in principle to form the new body, which will be repsonsible for allocating over $60 million in high performance funding.

Miskimmin says the merger will provide a more focused approach, linking a network of world-class facilities currently being developed around the country and take high performance sport in New Zealand to a new level.

But he says athletes need not be nervous about their funding ahead of next year's London Olympics as they're unlikely to notice any difference in high performance administration and simply need to continue their preparation for the Games.

Miskimmin says the final strucure of the new organisation, what it will be called and who it'll report to is expected to be announced in July.
