Newcastle in race for Bennett

9:29 am on 31 March 2011

There's a big night ahead for members of the Newcastle Knights league club.

The two major issues on the agenda will be deciding if Newcastle is a realistic coaching option for the great Wayne Bennett, and voting on a takover bid for the club by the mining magnate Nathan Tinkler.

Wayne Bennett officially announced yesterday that he'd be leaving St George-Illawarra at the end of this season, but he refused to discuss his plans for next year, and insisted he had not yet agreed to return to the Brisbane Broncos.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Newcastle would no longer be an option for Bennett if Nathan Tinkler's takeover bid is unsuccessful.

It has been suggestsed Tinkler is prepared to offer the NRL's most successful coach 2-million dollars a year.
