Australia's netball captain Sharelle McMahon has had an operation to repair the achilles tendon she ruptured on Thursday night.

The injury's ruled McMahon out of the world championships in Singapore in July, a huge blow to Australia's title defence, and is likely to end her career.

The 33-year-old goal attack was carried off the court during her Melbourne Vixens' 10-goal home loss to the trans-Tasman championship leaders, the Queensland Firebirds.

McMahon has 118 Test caps over 14 years and has been Diamonds captain since 2008.
