Strong swim from Ingram in backstroke heats

11:26 am on 4 April 2011

One of New Zealand's most experienced swimmers Melissa Ingram has signalled her intentions with a strong swim in heats on day two of the New Zealand Championships in Auckland.

Ingram, 25, is the top qualifier in the 100 metres backstroke in 1 minute 01.61 seconds.

That's under the qualifying time for the World Championships in July in Shanghai but she'll need to repeat the performance tonight as qualification is attained only in the finals.

Commonwealth Games teammate Natalie Wiegersma, who qualified in winning the 200m individual medley last night, was second fastest.

Gareth Kean and Daniel Bell topped qualifiers in the men's 100m backstroke.

Kean equalled the qualifying standard of 55.14 seconds to win the first heat with Bell winning the third 2/10ths of a second slower.
